The first historical dam of Big Bear was constructed by Frank E. Brown and E.G. Judson. They were looking for a new water source for their newly developed agricultural community: the town of Redlands.
In 1879, they looked toward the mountains for this additional water. 4 years later in 1883 he organized the Bear Valley Land and Water Company, purchased the necessary land, and in the summer of 1883 began construction of an ashlar rock dam.
This dam was completed in December of 1884. It was 60 feet high and 300 feet wide and contained 3304 yards of rockwork and 1600 barrels of cement. The total cost for labor and materials was $68,000.
At that time, the Bear Valley Dam created the largest man-made lake in the world, and was also considered the Eighth Wonder of the World because it held!
In 1911, J.S. Eastwood built the present multiple-arch dam, which tripled the capacity of the lake to 73,000 acre-feet. This dam was twenty feet higher and cost $138,000 to construct. This 1911 dam was reinforced in 1988 to comply with increased earthquake safety standards at a cost of nearly $13,000,000!
If you are looking for some fun this weekend, I would recommend coming up to Big Bear for our 60th annual Old Miner’s Days Parade!
The fun begins at 12:30pm at the corner of Summit and Big Bear Blvd. making its way westward towards the Village. It comes to a grand finale end in the Village at the Elk’s Lodge.
This year’s parade is expected to be bigger and better. More bands are participating including the Unites States Marine Corps Band from Twentynine Palms. The U.S. Army’s 11th Cavalry from Fort Irwin is a parade entry along with floats, equestrian units and lots of entries from local Valley organizations are part of the celebration of the Valley’s history.
A flyover by a U.S. Navy aircraft is also planned. This wonderful parade lasts just a few hours but the memories to be made will last a lifetime! Come and join us for this once a year celebration! Hope to see you there.

Living here in Big Bear my whole life, I have participated in the Miss Clementine fashion pageant since I can remember!
I Started out entering as a Tiny Miss contestant then to Junior Miss and finally being able to compete for the “Miss Clementine” title and now being in the family category.
What a great opportunity to feel like an old miner! It has always reminded me of Little House on the Prairie. It is also a wonderful occasion to be part of this celebrated community!
So, just a few weekends ago I entered the Miss Clementine pageant with my family (my two children, my older sister and her daughter) in the best family category. We won wearing our old fashion bathing suites on our way to the ”ole fishing hole”!
This weekend you can catch us in the Old Miner’s Day parade a top the Clementine float! Starting promptly at 12:30 on the corner of Summit and Big Bear Blvd, and continuing west towards the Village! I’m sure there will be no way to miss us, as we will be the bathing beauties singing “Zip a De Doo Dah”! Make sure to wave, shout and show us your appreciation! Hope to see you all there…cant wait!

Looking to have a fun day in Big Bear? Try what our girl’s did yesterday.
First they went to lunch at La Paz then they went miniature golfing at our local Magic Mountain. Then they went to our village drive and played at the arcade where Dj won a stuffed rose playing ski-ball. Then Lauryn and Dj headed over to the North Pole Fudge Company for a mini ice cream cone and Carmel apples.
The lady’s took a break and played some Wii before heading to Old Country Inn for dinner. Sounds like the lady’s had a great day in Big Bear.
If you would like to come up and have fun doing some of these activities give me a call to reserve your cabin today at 1 (800) 363-8303 at Gold Rush Resort Rentals where we strive to make your stay a great one….Bre = )
Checker Bloom is a rare flower in Big Bear. The Checker Bloom is a perennial with a small cluster of leaves at it’s base and a 2-3 ft. spike of 1-inch deep pinkish-purplish flower.
The stems are raher lax as it grows in perennial grass thickets in seasonal springs. Showy in it’s delicate way. It needs garden conditions, part shade to full sun. this cute plant is native down the road from us.
In the ground in the nursery it stays visible but in it’s grassy thicket you cannot find it as all it retains is a 4-inch unlimited winter water but little summer water.
In the wild it grows with Stipa cernua, Stipa pulchera, From granitic soils, to serpentine, edges of beach sand to heavy clay. Although sparsiflora, amonst others, they all morph together to make seperation difficult and often meaningless.
This flower is very rare in Big Bear but they are found up here, and are illegal to build property over the land!

Lodgepole pines seldom grow taller than 70 feet and in Southern California they usually grow above 8,000’.
An exception to these rules occurs high on the mountaintop near Bluff Lake. This shallow private lake surrounded by lush forest and green meadows, is about 3 miles south of Big Bear Lake.
Here at an elevation of 7500’, grow the largest Lodgepole pines in the WORLD! The world “Champion” discovered in 1963, is a magnificent, double-topped tree that towers above the surrounding forest reaching a height of 110+ feet. The circumference of the trunk at the bottom is 22 ½ feet, however the bulbous base is 36 feet in circumference. Its age is estimated at 440 years.
From the west end of Big Bear Lake Village, drive south west to Mill Creek Road (right past the Alpine Slides) continue about ½ mile, follow Mill Creek Rd (2N10) left after it intersects with Tulip Lane. This road is paved for about ½ mile and then becomes dirt. Follow the 2N10 road until you reach 2N11, then bear left and follow the Champion Lodgepole signs to the parking area at the beginning of the hiking trail.
NOTE: YOU WILL NEED A PARKING PASS, WHICH MAY BE PURCHASED IN TOWN THE ADVENTURE PASS IS A COST OF ONLY $5 FOR THE DAY AND $35 FOR AN ANNUAL PASS.
Follow the Champion Lodgepole trail about ½ mile through the forest along a trickling stream until you reach a junction in the trail turn right and walk a few yards through a lush area filled with Bracken Ferns, Wild Columbine, Lupine, Corn Lilies and other wildflowers. Cross over the tiny wooden bridge, on your left will be a large green meadow and on your right, this magnificent tree surrounded by a small wooden fence and wildflowers. This is one of the lushest areas in the mountains around Big Bear Lake.
Best months to see the wildflowers are June and July, and October is also a great month to see the changing colors of the leaves.
This adventure will be one to remember, we went just a few weeks ago! Hope to see you on the trail!
Have a great day ~ Sara J
I had my 89 year old aunt up for a visit and we were having a great time, until she got violently ill! I was scared and drove her to our local emergency room/hospital. Well, many folks complain about the size of it but I will tell you they had everything going like a well oiled machine!
She is doing much better and will need surgery this week, but remember that we have an excellent hospital on this hill and it is even in our own community! It is nice to know when you play in the mountains there is someone around to assist in times of need.
Why don’t you join us up here in the COOL AIR and stay a while! I have many rentals here for you and they are MUCH more reasonably priced than a hospital!
Give me a call…
