Canoe Tours at The Discovery Center

Learn how to canoe on a relaxed 2-hour guided tour of beautiful Big Bear Lake around the Grout Bay.

 

After a quick paddling lesson, you will paddle along the shore looking for beaver, great blue herons, and ducklings.

 

Along the way you will learn the natural history of the Big Bear Valley along with the various flora and fauna found in the area.

 

Meet at the Discovery Center about 15 – 20 minutes early, and caravan to the lake at Captain John’s Fawn Harbor. They provide water and even a snack, so bring the kids and make some great memories with us on the lake!

 

Children must be at least 6 years old and must be accompanied by an adult of course.

 

Tours are limited to only 14 people and reservations are recommended.

 

Call (909) 382-2790 or (909) 866-3437 for reservations. Costs for adults is $25, and children (6-12) are only $15.

 

You could plan a tour for any Thursday through Sunday now through September 6.

 

Tours are from 4pm -6pm and on Sunday they do have an extra morning tour available starting at 9am – 11am as well as the normal 4pm -6pm tour.

 

So get out there get some exercise and enjoy the scenery of our beautiful community!

The Burros are back in Big Bear!

burroThis is a good thing and a bad thing.  In 1997 the BLM and Forest Service took a Burro Census and decided it was time to remove the Burros from the immediate area.  That done,  Burros stopped eating our wood around the house, knocking over our trash, and braying all day and night! I miss them…

So, as of right now, you can come up and see the burros kicking around the neighborhoods!  But get here quickly, as some government agency will remove them…I promise.  It seems you can’t control people so the burros suffer.

Greek Tossed Pasta Salad

Here is a great pasta salad perfect for summer. Super easy to make and incredibly yummy!

 

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 box of Suddenly salad
  • ¼ cup water
  • 3 Tbls. Vegetable oil
  • 4 cups of torn romaine lettuce2
  • 2 medium tomatoes – coarsely chopped (about 1 ½ cups)
  • 1 small Cucumber – coarsely chopped (about 1 cup)
  • ½ cup of thinly slices red onion
  • 4 oz. of crumbled feta cheese (about 1 cup)
  • 1 can (2 ¼ oz) of sliced olives – drained

Here’s how you make it:

  •  
    1. Empty pasta mix into boiling water. Gently boil uncover for about 12 minutes or until tender.
    2. Drain pasta, rinse, shake and drain well
    3. In a large bowl stir together seasoning mix (from pasta salad box) oil, water and pasta. Stir in the rest of the ingredients
    4.  Top with croutons and parmesan cheese
    5. Serve or refrigerate right away

Who is 65 years old, has his own website, and is a national icon?  It is Smoky Bear!  His “birthday” is Aug. 8, 2009 and he is still going strong preventing forest fires!

Smokey has no middle name, not even “THE”…but he is the real deal.  Go to his website…www.smokeybear.com and take the “Get Your Smokey On Pledge” and play some games.  You have to be at least 13 to take the pledge!

I have already told you about Smokey Bear and his uncoming birthday.  Welll, I just found out that the Big Bear Discovery Center on North Shore in Fawnskin is going to have  a birthday cake for ol’ Smokey!  Guess what?  We are invited!
August 8th, 2009 – August 9th, 2009
The Discovery Center has a full weekend of celebratin’ going on!  Don’t miss out!  (I’m going for the CAKE!)

Well folks, it is that time of the year when the Geocaching crowds come up to the cool mountains for that Geocaching Rush!

The weekend of August 14-17, 2009 will be one heck of a Geocaching Treat.  It all kicks off at The Log Cabin with the Geocaching CheeseBurger Bash at 5:00 pm followed by the “We’ll Leave The Lights On 3….Friday the 14th Flash Event! 

Saturday the 15th starts with TheBig Bear Flash Mob @9:00am-then onto the one, the only…Big Bear Geocaching Event at 3:00!  After that, hit the National Forest for The Event Cache Too 

Sunday @ 4:00 starts the 2009 Geo-Nite Out #8 for some Pizza.
