50K Trout Derby – May 30 – 31

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Spring is here and that means that the lake and marinas are open for launching boats. All you fishermen out there get ready for some great fishing this season.

Big Bear Lake is all freshwater and is brimming with rainbow trout and other fish varieties including bass, catfish and crappie. Every year the Department of Fish and Game plant more than 150,000 pounds of rainbow trout, all for you anglers to enjoy.

Big Bear Lakes average depth is approximately 35 feet, currently the lake depth is just over 67 feet at its lowest point. The Big Bear Municipal Water District expect another foot or two to increase by the end of April.

If you’re really into fishing and are competitive, don’t miss the Trout Derby held on May 30 and 31. Trout are tagged for the event, there’s a fish tagged for $50,000 cash prize! WOW, that would buy a really nice boat and some great fishing equipment! There are other prizes to win and nine other cash prizes.
The event costs $35 per adult, $20 per child 15 years and under.

Strange Weather Yesterday!

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Well the really odd weather continued again on Wednesday the 14th. It started out as a nice sunny day with just a little bit of a cool wind. But then the dark clouds rolled in and it looked like we might get some rain but wrong again it ended up with a five minute snow storm with just a little bit of hail tossed in for good measure.

With the weirdest rolling in right after the mini snow flurry we got some very dark gray fog that was so thick that I could not even see across the street. But that cold wind just came back in and blew all the fog away.

Happy Easter!

Hoppy Easter!

“Hoppy” Easter!

Happy Easter to all!

After a couple days of gloominess, the sun has come out for this beautiful Sunday holiday.

It is a gorgeous Spring day, AND the ski resorts are still open. The town is fairly busy this morning, going to church, having Easter egg hunts and possibly attending one of the awesome brunchs we have around town.

I wish you all a great day with your family and friends.

Interesting Day

Friday, April 10th, 2009

After all of the weird weather we had here on Wednesday I have to say that I was rather surprised that we had such a nice sunny day on Thursday on the mountain. Just a little bit of a breeze and a few pretty white clouds floating around the sky.

The trees are starting to show more green which makes me think that spring is trying very hard to be here to stay and that the little bit of snow that showed up was just a last ditch effort by winter to give us one last slap.

But lets hope that we don’t see that again for several more months.

Interesting Weather

Friday, April 10th, 2009

Well the weather on Wednesday was a little bit odd for a spring day in April.

First we had a wind storm on Tuesday night but then Wednesday morning it was a little bit sunny but by Wednesday afternoon the wind was back. Then we got a cross between snow and hail coming down, that only lasted for about 15min.

It tried to rain for a few minutes but then that turned into snow which gave us a lite dusting on the ground which was completely melted away by Thursday morning.

I am looking forward to seeing what the weather brings for the mountain tomorrow.

Larger storm expected Friday

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

The gray clouds are overhead, and there is a crisp chill in the air. The mini storm has rolled through leaving us with less than an inch of snow. Friday is supposed to be much larger, expected to bring up to several inches of snow.

The consensus around town is that we are over Winter, ready for the warm weather. So hopefully the cold weather system will pass by us quickly so we get on with Spring here in Big Bear!
