Castle Rock Trail

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

This is an awesome hike, with a great view of the lake, and on your way up you might even run into a little waterfall if you catch it in the right season.

It’s only about a mile hike each way, but to see the grand view you will have to do a little rock climbing. It starts in a forested gully at the west end of the valley just past Boulder Bay 1 mile east of Big Bear Dam or 3 miles west of Big Bear Lake Village.

The trail climbs steadily to the left through magnificent stands of Jeffrey and Ponderosa Pines, White Fir, Western and Incense Cedar, passing huge granite boulders on your right.

Just as the trail turns back to the right among some rock steps, there is a waterfall straight ahead (usually from early spring through the middle of summer, depending on rainfall)!

The hike takes a steady ascent about 700 mile gain in elevation. Castle rock is the large rock formation immediately to the right. You can leave the trail there.

The eaisest way up the rock is to go about 50 feet around the north side of theformation, then climb up an indention to the summit and enjoy the beautiful views of Big Bear Lake and the surrounding areas.

Take lots of water and don’t forget sunscreen and maybe even a hat. Have a great time, be careful and remember pack up any trash you make and leave our forest nicer than you found it!

Big Bear Air Fair

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Hours: Saturday, August 29th, 2009
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Admission: $1.00
Location: Big Bear City Airport
501 W. Valley Blvd.
Big Bear City, Ca. 92314

Big Bear City Airport (L35) asks that you save the date of August 29th as the 2009 “Wings Over Big Bear” Air Fair soars into the San Bernardino Mountains. This year’s theme “Serving Our Community” highlights the value and benefits that our airport provides to Big Bear’s residents and valley visitors.

Gates open at 7AM with a pancake breakfast prepared by Big Bear Kiwanis. The show starts two hours later with a spectacular high altitude entrance by the Just in Time Skydivers and an emotional marching musical presentation by Lake Arrowhead’s Fife and Drum Corp.

“Wings Over Big Bear” brings with it more than a dozen of the aircraft which secured our Nation’s independence in earlier years. Two World War II vintage B-25 Mitchell Bombers, a carrier capable F4U Corsair, the 420 MPH P38 Lightning, the very recognizable P-51 Mustang long range fighter, a 1000+ horsepower P-40 Warhawk and a Douglas Dauntless Navy dive bomber arrive straight out of the 1940’s to grace our airspace. These aircraft will be accompanied on the display ramp by 2 Vietnam era Douglas A-1 Skyraider’s and an assortment of T-34 propeller and T-38 jet training aircraft. Guests should find the 1930’s designed twin engine C-45 Expeditor, also known as the Beechcraft Model 18, an exciting new addition to the display.

Fly-Ins are welcomed and enthusiastically encouraged to participate in the spot landing competition upon arrival. Parking will be available on the ramp south of the runway and east of the terminal. Awards will be presented in a variety of categories for aircraft wishing to be reviewed by our panel of judges.

Consistent with the vintage aircraft on display, the Air Fair 1940’s admission price of just $1 should encourage visitors to come and enjoy the many food and souvenir vendors and community group exhibits. This day promises to be filled with fun, food, fresh air and fantastic flying.

For additional information contact: Nancy Jones at 909-585-3219.

For pilots flying into the show: There will be a spot-landing contest, and aircraft can be judged in several categories such as Best of Show, People’s Choice and more. Plaques will be awarded to the winners of these categories.

Fuel: Fuel will be available from the fuel trucks on a “first-come-first-serve” basis. Place your order with the fuel truck drivers who will be on the field; we will have one truck for 100LL and one for Jet A.

For aircraft within the showlines: There will be no engine running allowed between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Contact a parking official in orange vest before departure.

For those interested in volunteering, becoming a food or concession vendor or if you’d like to display your airplane, please call Nancy at 909-585-3219.
